Information For Parents

How will being a member of a Greek fraternity contribute to and / or hinder my son's educational experience?

Making the decision to join a Greek fraternity is indeed an important one as it is a commitment for one's entire college career. The Gamma Rho chapter and Cameron University strongly encourage parents to be involved in the decision making process.

Greek Life at Cameron provides students with a variety of opportunities to be involved in their campus community. These enthusiastic students plan philanthropy events (Adopt-a-street, Books For Kids, Toys for Tots, etc.), serve as student leaders in campus organizations, host social events and participate in Cameron intramural sports.

With this said, being a member of a fraternity does place demands on a student's time. Our Greek organizations place a high emphasis on successful academics and in fact, the all Greek GPA is higher than the all-student GPA. However, "pledging" or "associating" can be very demanding, yet there is always room for flexibility within one's pledge program. The key concept for parents to be aware of is COMMUNICATION! Cameron students, being very bright and respectful, are expected to communicate their difficulties to the professors, and it is really no different within a fraternity. If your son or daughter experiences being overextended or overwhelmed, encourage him to talk to the Pledge Trainer or Chapter President. Once those difficulties have been communicated, the chapter will make every effort to assist their newest member.

Do the Greek organizations have Houses?

None of the Greek organizations at Cameron University currently have houses. Instead, each chapter has a "meeting room" in the Student Union. These rooms are designed similar to a large living room and are not residential. The meeting room provides a place on the main campus for members to congregate, conduct study groups, practice skits for recruitment, and hold various chapter business meetings.

Who should we contact if we have questions or concerns about Greek Life at Cameron University?

Cameron University takes it's commitment to individual Greek students as well as to Greek chapters very seriously. Your son or daughter may use the resources found within Student Services whenever needed. If at any time you would like more information about Greek Life or have questions about your son's experience within the Greek community, please do not hesitate to contact the Student Activities Director at (580) 581-2217.

Other resources are available at the North-American Interfraternity Council web site titled "Parent's Guide".

What is "hazing" and what can I do as a parent to educate myself about this issue?

Cameron University, the State of Oklahoma, and our national fraternities and sororities have strict guidelines and policies to prevent hazing.

Hazing is defined as any action taken intentionally by a chapter or its members to harass other members or pledges. Examples of such activities are paddling, creation of excessive fatigue, any public embarrassment or ridicule and activities which interfere with scholastic achievement and any other activities of this type which are not consistent with the Laws of the Fraternity, Ritual or policy, or the regulations and policies of the educational institution.

Cameron and each fraternity chapter educates leaders and new members about how to prevent hazing. As a parent, keep an open line of communication with your son or daughter while they are at Cameron. If at any time you have concerns about your child, please don't hesitate to contact us.

How can I support Greek Life at Cameron University?

Attend Family Day events...attend Homecoming Events...COME TO CAMPUS and ask your child how you can help their particular group. Many parents have resources that will support the efforts of groups. Model community service by offering to donate time and resources to their philanthropic events and to individual chapters themselves.

While college students may act like they want total independence, most welcome the support and involvement of parents in their college experience.

A message from the 2008 chapter president...

Dear Parents,

Thank you for taking the time to become familiar with your son's college education and learn more about fraternities. Membership in Sigma Tau Gamma is an exciting and rewarding adventure that stays with you long after graduation. As a member in Sigma Tau Gamma, your son will learn to be a leader of his peers, he'll be able to give back to the community with our philanthropies, and he'll develop networking skills that will lead him into and carry over into his professional career. College life can be daunting for a freshman. The Fraternity will become like a family for him, pushing him to succeed, helping him when he's down, and giving him a place to rest and relax after that tough exam. One of the biggest challenges for a new freshman is not knowing anyone, where to go, or what to do. Membership in Sigma Tau Gamma gives immediate access to the inside scoop on everything and anything a new freshman needs. Thank you once again for taking an interest in your son's college education. We look forward to welcoming your son into our brotherhood and meeting you at one of our many events during their stay here at Cameron University.

Bradford Shane Franks Jr.
Gamma Rho Chapter President 2008
